Dr David Stevens, Leader of the Corrymeela Community dies after short illness

It is with great sadness that Corrymeela announces the death of Dr David Stevens, Leader of the Corrymeela Community who died peacefully at home on Sunday 23rd May after a short illness.

David became Leader of the Corrymeela Community in 2004. He was with Corrymeela from the earliest days when he volunteered while studying chemistry at Queens University. David was instrumental in planning for and delivering a major multi million pound rebuilding programme at the Corrymeela Centre in Ballycastle. Kate Pettis MBE Chair of the Corrymeela Council said 'David was a man of integrity, courage and Christian faith. He did not shirk making difficult decisions and he has surely made a significant contribution not only to Corrymeela but to the wider Northern Ireland community. It has been an honour to work with him.'

David was a theologian of great insight and an accomplished author. He wrote on what Christians can bring to the search for reconciliation, both in a social and political context and was highly respected in the wider church community. Duncan Morrow Chief Executive Officer of the Community Relations Council said 'David brought unrivalled commitment to community relations combined with one of the sharpest minds and willingness to be honest even when it was uncomfortable. His contribution to peace making will be hugely missed.'
