SLIDESHOW: Somme Commemoration Service in Broughshane
Broughshane Royal British Legion branch held a special service to commemorate the Somme in the village on Sunday afternoon, June 28.
The commemorative event at the village war memorial at 3pm attracted a large gathering of villagers and visitors some of whom laid wreaths as they remembered the terrible toll of July 1, 1916.
The opening day of the Somme campaign was the bloodiest in local military history and the names of many of those local men who fell on that date are carved in stone on war memorials throughout the borough and their names are also found on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing.
